“American Child” – an intimate glimpse into Juliet’s world.
Julie is a Singer/ Songwriter born and raised in the heart of Vietnam’s capital. She identifies herself as a Songwriter with topics that revolve around Pop-Cultures and contemporary arts. As an introvert herself, she uses music as her language to communicate with the world around her.
She partakes in journalistic activities in her schoolwork and is currently the editor of her University Magazine. She tries to integrate contemporary culture and elements of fine arts into her works. With the Great Gatsby, How I Met Your Mother as visual and story references for her new EP
Red, green, and the American Dream
The Cover art is designed by Julie herself as an interpretation of the American dream: “My Cover art is dominantly covered in Red as it’s one of the predominant colors in the American flag. I’m obsessed with the Red and Green color combination as it’s one of the most complicated color combinations to pull off correctly, with the Green highlight in the Mermaid’s reflection representing the facade of the American dream. As a foreign student studying in the US, I feel the Americans are obsessed with personal identity and self-identification. In my four years of staying abroad to seek higher education there, I constantly felt the peer pressure of the American dream being forced down upon me. I want to capture that feeling of emptiness and the loneliness that comes with that stereotypical American dream. Like a fish out of water, or in this case, like a mermaid out of water.”
“A juxtaposition between American’s Pop-Culture with the Vietnamese Pop-Culture to highlight the awkwardness between my identity as a Foreign Student”
“American Child” is Julie’s interpretation of the fast and poignant lifestyle associated with the American dating culture, portrayed under the lens of an indie-pop songwriter. The songs in this project all have their musical direction yet are tied together with a vintage vibe. The Vintage mood and tones are expressed most directly in the Music Video for Amerian Child through the simple set design.
“It’s my way to represent the essence of Fine Arts in a modern setting. Thanks to Duc Viet, my director for the Music Video, our project will become the first Indie Artist’s Music Project to be fully endorsed by Fujifilm Vietnam and will be shot entirely on a GFX100 Medium-Format Camera to embrace the old school sense of the imagery.”
The music Video is Julie’s way to introduce Fine Arts and her worldview to the Vietnamese youths. Juliet stated: “We, the majority of the Vietnamese younger generation, do not appreciate arts for its cultural value. Rather, we only perceive art at face value, as a symbol of status and the association with the elite”
We hope the project will be an introduction for the Vietnamese youth to appreciate music and arts for what it is.
